Why I’m eventually moving away from Tacoma

I bet you weren’t expecting this type of article but hear me out, Tacoma is a gem; but Seattle and NY are the souls of my being.

I was born and raised in Tacoma

1990 – 2011 I lived in Tacoma until I moved out of city limits to Parkland, which is like 5-10 mins from Tacoma City lines and from 2011- 2017 I lived in Parkland and then mid-2017 I moved to the downtown area of Tacoma.

The grind of living in Parkland

I started college while I lived in Parkland, and I had to take an hour + bus ride to school and back home each day. The grind was real, leaving at 7 am and getting home around 9 pm some nights and still having to do college work.

Sometimes being on 4 buses in one day because I had to drop my son off at school and then pick him up. Long story short after 2 years I dropped out to make $$ online.

Being inspired by those around you

In 2015 I was making money from selling ebooks and 2016 I started to learn how to code. I’ve always been a writer but didn’t know how to transfer my writing skills to dollars and I realized at one point that college wasn’t for me and that I needed to give myself a shot at doing things my way.

While learning how to code I decided to start visiting Seattle more often because its where the tech giants are and other young adult professionals. On the journey of coding and writing, I found out about written content and tech and how the two of them can go together.

Seattle has this hustle…

That Tacoma just does not have. People walk with purpose because there is a cost to earning their keep in the heart of the city. Either you hustle and work. Or you can’t afford the city.

Being in that environment I realized how much I wanted to be around it every day, it motivated me and inspired me. I started my first website in a Seattle hotel room on Dec 31st, 2016.

I didn’t want to go back to parkland where a lot of my surroundings consisted of people living off the government and smoking all day, it just wasn’t my scene but the rent was cheap like $650 for a two bedroom.

I knew that I wanted to go into 2017 with the incentive of being apart of that Seattle hustle and grind, so I made the choice of staying in Seattle for the New Year and immersed myself in the mindset of those working hard around me.

Fast forward to 2017-2018

The grind has not stopped and I now have 9 websites and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. But it took me getting out of my comfort zone and visualizing where I want to be and surrounding myself in a different environment than I was used to.

Eventually, I will be moving to Downtown Seattle before Settling over on the East Coast, preferably Cobble Hill Brooklyn or Park Slope. I dream of owning a brownstone while homeschooling my son and working from home.

Other reasons I’m leaving Tacoma

My heart is in NY and moving to Downtown Seattle will get me one step closer to being in NY because if I can afford to make it in Seattle, I’ll be able to afford trips to NY and work my way up from one income bracket to another.

“Tacoma is a Gem and I’ll always have a place for it in my heart; but if you been in one place your whole life, you’re missing out”

I’ll always have a spot for downtown Tacoma and Tacoma taught me how to grind and hustle for myself and become who I am today. I like to say the streets raised me as well as myself and if it wasn’t for struggles and hardships early on, I wouldn’t be the person I am now.
